2025 Innovative Program
The Reading Revolution program at St Raphael’s School is a shining example of contemporary innovation in Catholic education. This transformative approach to early literacy bridges the gap between early learning and primary education by actively involving families, educators, and local kindergartens in fostering a lifelong love of reading. Unlike traditional literacy initiatives, this program offers a multifaceted and community-centred model that integrates expert knowledge, strategic planning, and dynamic engagement.
At the heart of the program is a unique blend of initiatives designed to promote literacy inclusively and impactfully. These include expert-led discussions featuring leading voices in literacy education and child development, offering families practical, evidence-based strategies to support reading at home. Additionally, children participate in engaging storytelling sessions and interactive literacy activities that make reading both accessible and enjoyable. These efforts are supported by a carefully considered outreach strategy, which builds connections with local early learning centres and kindergartens to ensure a smoother and more confident transition into school life.
Now a signature event on the school calendar, The Reading Revolution program has demonstrated sustainability and long-term impact through its continuous refinement. The program evolves each year, incorporating current research, expert insights, and community feedback to remain relevant and effective. Its strength lies in its ability to unite diverse groups across the education ecosystem including students, parents, teachers, and members of the broader Unley / Parkside community creating a shared culture of literacy and learning.
The program’s success is reflected in both measurable outcomes and external recognition. Parents and educators consistently report increased engagement with literacy at home, and student outcomes, such as a 100% pass rate in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, demonstrate its effectiveness in strengthening early reading skills. Beyond academic indicators, The Reading Revolution program was honoured with the Community Event of the Year at the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards, acknowledging its significance beyond the school community.
In addition to its impact at St Raphael’s, the program has gained attention within the broader education sector. Elements of the initiative have inspired discussions in other schools and early learning centres, where its model of collaborative literacy engagement is being explored for implementation. This broader influence affirms its value as a forward-thinking, community-driven approach to education.
Through its focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, The Reading Revolution program has redefined how Catholic schools can approach early literacy. By uniting educators, experts, families, and children in a shared mission, the program has achieved a meaningful and lasting impact.
It stands as a model of best practice making The Reading Revolution program a highly deserving recipient of the 2025 Catholic Education Award South Australia for Innovative Program.
